| Description | DISCUSSION FORUM ON: Henri Ghesquiere's book: SINGAPORE'S SUCCESS - Engineering economic growth
On a Wednesday evening, the normally deserted KBC meeting room quickly filled with participants eager to take part in the forum jointly organised by BLBG, BLAS and the Belgian Embassy. The event's protagonist, our compatriot and former IMF economist Henri Ghesquiere, arrived just in time from his meeting with MM Lee Kuan Yew.
After a short reception Hugo Verbist from the Belgian Embassy introduced Henri, Alain Vandenborre, author of the book: "Proudly Singaporean: my passport to a challenging future", Dr. Khor Hoe Ee from the Monetary Authority Singapore and Reuters-journalist Geert Declercq. Hugo's role was to monitor the debate, a task which turned out to be more challenging than expected.
In his opening remarks Henri disillusioned all those would-be writers among us by pointing to the extremely fierce competition. To his surprise his book had not been as prominently displayed in the bookstores as a book entitled "Why men fall asleep after sex". However before our attention was diverted to this compelling topic Henri swiftly moved on to the core of his talk by providing us with an astonishingly clear and succinct overview of Singapore's economic fundamentals. After he had stressed how Singapore has consistently been able to turn potential weaknesses into strengths, and extremely lively debate ensued and diverging opinions clashed. A number of questions and comments were thrown into the discussion for additional controversy, but we spare you the details and invite you to join us next time.
While the finger food and drinks before the discussion had enabled us to mingle and meet new faces, the following reception had a rather cooling and winding down effect. After all, next day was a working day. We sincerely wish to thank the organisers for the excellent event, our sponsor KBC, all attendants and -of course- Henri Ghesquiere for this enlightening exchange of ideas. |
